Popularity nothing to do with Raikkonen's new deal - Ferrari

Ferrari insists that Kimi Raikkonen was given a new Formula 1 deal because he was the fastest man available, not because he was the most popular or the cheapest option. Raikkonen's future with Ferrari had been the subject of intense speculation for months on the back of a difficult start to the campaign. But despite Ferrari sounding out Williams about how much it would cost to buy out Valtteri Bottas's contract, the Italian team in the end elected to take up an option it had on Raikkonen. Speaking about the reasons for the decision, Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene was insistent that money - not the fact Raikkonen is F1's most popular driver – were factors.
