FIA backtracks on standard gearboxes

Formula 1 will not be using standardised gearboxes in 2021 after the World Motor Sport Council voted against the proposal. Earlier this year the FIA issued an invitation to companies to tender for standard gearboxes. Motorsport's governing body had hoped to introduce a single supplier for gearbox cassettes in 2021 in a bid to cut the costs of competing in Formula 1. The proposal, though, has been voted down by the WMSC. 'The Council's decision was based on consideration of both technical and financial information made available by teams and suppliers,' an FIA's statement read.
