Austrian apprentice kicks off his F1 career at home

On this day in 1984, Gerhard Berger started the first of his 210 Grands Prix, receiving his baptism of fire on home turf with the ATS team. The 25-year-old local debutant lined up P20 on the grid and kept it together to bring himself home 12th. One week later, at the Italian GP at Monza, Berger would clinch his maiden championship points after a solid drive to sixth.
