Whiting hits back at Vettel’s SC criticism

FIA race director Charlie Whiting explain the decision to use the Safety Car during the Chinese Grand Prix following criticism from championship leader Sebastian Vettel. Vettel said race control should have timed its deployment in a way which did not put them at a disadvantage and should have used the Virtual Safety Car firstly to ‘freeze’ the race. However, Whiting said race control do not the potential effect of the Safety Car on a race when they choose to use it. “If we decide to use the Safety Car it’s for safety reasons and I don’t look to see who’s going to be advantaged and disadvantaged,” he said. “We waited until there was a good gap in the traffic,” he said....
