Strong performances after Verstappen departure a ‘coincidence' says Sainz

Carlos Sainz Jr. believes his good performances during the 2016 Formula 1 season was nothing to do with Max Verstappen being promoted to Red Bull Racing. The Scuderia Toro Rosso driver debuted in 2015 alongside Verstappen, and for 2016 they continued as team-mates, until the Russian Grand Prix where Verstappen was promoted to the sister team. Following the poor display from Daniil Kvyat, where he crashed twice into Scuderia Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel, the decision was made to demote him. At the Spanish Grand Prix, Sainz secured his career-best finish of sixth. From this moment, the Spaniard went on to out-qualify and outscore his new team-mate over the rest of the season.
