Mexican GP: Fire drama for Verstappen as Hamilton tops FP1

Lewis Hamilton topped first practice for the Mexican GP as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen suffered an early exit from the session due to a dramatic brake fire. Verstappen was forced to sit out the second half of the session after his car returned to the pits with its brakes on fire, which caused serious damage to the internals. Hamilton lapped in 1m20.914s, 0.759s faster than title rival Nico Rosberg, who slipped to seventh as the session wore on. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen were second and third fastest respectively – Vettel within a tenth of Hamilton’s best time, albeit on the soft tyre as opposed to Hamilton’s medium-shod best.
