Alonso tops opening morning of Silverstone test

Fernando Alonso put McLaren on top of the timesheets on the opening morning of Formula 1's second in-season test at Silverstone, the Spaniard leading the way by 1.5 seconds. Alonso led for much of the three-and-a-half hour session as he ousted Mercedes development driver Esteban Ocon from the top spot early in the second hour and stayed there until the chequered flag with a succession of improvements. The two-time champion's benchmark time of 1m31.290s came during the third hour of running, putting him 1.543s clear of Ocon on the Frenchman's first appearance for Mercedes.
