Australian GP: Rosberg wins season opener, Alonso’s crash halts race

Nico Rosberg got his F1 World Championship challenge off to a perfect start in the season-opening Australian GP, after clipping Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton at the first corner and overcoming the challenge of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. The race was punctuated by a huge crash that befell McLaren’s Fernando Alonso, who flew over the back of Esteban Gutierrez’s Haas and slammed into a barrier before somersaulting across the gravel trap. Both were unhurt. Rosberg took the lead after Ferrari’s tyre strategy backfired. Vettel had just changed to supersoft tyres before the red flag, and stayed on them while Rosberg took adavantage of the stoppage to change from softs to mediums. As...
