– Mercedes has confirmed that Lewis Hamilton's opening day crash at Jerez was caused by a car failure. Shortly before 1pm local time (GMT +1), Hamilton slid into the Turn 1 barriers at the Spanish venue, causing considerable damage to the front-end of the new W05, which had broken cover directly ahead of the test.
