Mercedes' secret 1,000km tyre test angers rivals
It has emerged that Mercedes conducted a secret test with Pirelli between the Spanish and Monaco Grands Prix, which has left the German manufacturer’s rivals unhappy. Mercedes ran 1,000kms at Barcelona over three days a week ago, which rivals believe gave the team - that has claimed four straight pole positions - an unfair advantage. Defending champions Red Bull, which learned about the test “second hand”, has been the most vocal of the lot and has moved to seek clarification on the test from motorsport’s governing body, the FIA, as it believes that Mercedes has clearly gained from the track time.
